Some of you may notice that we have changed the checkpoints for stage 3. After several concerns were expressed about the proposed route into Cahaba Heights in the evening, we at Bici decided it best to keep things closer to town in order to prevent people from getting lost in the mean streets of Mountain Brook or worse get hurt on one of the many dark, fast decents. So there you have it, an over the mountain and back gut wrenching 10 mile sufferfest. I know some of you who haven’t raced in any of our races are thinking ,” 10 miles ain’t so bad.” Come out and see for your self. There is no pace lining, no designated route, and sure as hell no holding back. This is a full gas half hour of PAIN!

Anyway, hope to see any and all of you at Bici Saturday race. Racing or not.

So there you have it, the results for the second stage of the Tour de Birmingham. This stage we introduced KOM and Sprint points for those who aren’t going to able to race every weekend. This week BBC and Bottletree served as the KOM and Sprint checkpoints, forcing riders to choose which checkpoint to head toward first for highest points. Next week both checkpoints will be KOM stops so there will be a lot of points up for grabs and the category will probably shake up.

Thanks go out to Mike and the guys at Birmingham Bicycle Company for the awesome prizes and the pushup checkpoint. Also a big thanks to our volunteers who did a great job keeping up with the chaos so we can keep these results straight.

Tonight was a lot of fun and went off with only a few hitches. For those who couldn’t race tonight I apologize for not being clear about the rules. Front and rear lights are absolutely required, as our helmets. Also, we have limited registration time as a way to limit the number of volunteers required so more people can race. Again I apologize for not being absolutely clear on those things and hope to see you guys back next week.

I would also like to thank our volunteers tonight. They were amazing. Nancy Porter helped out at the start and Carole Barton and Amy Dunn clocked time at the end. They did an incredible job. Hope to see everyone out next week for our first mass start stage. Stay tuned for details.

Saturday night marks the beginning of the craziest alley cat series Birmingham has ever seen. Throughout the month of July there will be four stages (July 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 31st) taking racers through out the Birmingham area: Downtown, Crestwood, Homewood, Mountain Brook and Vestavia!

The week before each race I will be posting the event poster and info for each stage so that everyone can study up, pre ride, buy some lycra or maybe even a road bike. Every stage is suited for different rider styles and the rider with the most points at the end of the series takes the yellow ‘jersey’. There will be men’s and women’s categories only. Fixies will be racing the roadies in the same category. Who knows, the TT and circuit race may suit a fixed gear rider more than that of a geared bike while the rollers and mountain climbs will undoubtedly favor someone who can turn over those gears. Birmingham Bicycle Company and Cahaba Cycles are throwing in some schwag for their stages and we’re working on some stuff for the finale but don’t be mistaken, this race is for the glory not a gift card. The buy in for each race is only $5 and benefits Bici.

We will need some rad volunteers to help work check points for this series so if you are interested email me at alan (at) bicicoop (dot) org. Stay tuned this week for more info about the races, scoring, smack talking, and the like.

Bike to Work Week!

It’s a big week in Birmingham for those who ride (or want to ride!) a bike. Here is the low-down on what is ahead:

Wednesday, May 19 7pm, Ride of Silence a free group ride created to honor those cyclists who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roads.
meet at Homewood Cycles around 6:45, ride leaves promptly at 7. A slow, silent ride to raise awareness, with a grillout afterwards at the Homewood City Hall complex. Details here.

Thursday May 20 6:30-8:30 Catalyst Garden Party at the Norwood Garden. Details here. If you want to have a group ride over there, shoot an email and we will see what we can work out! I think it would be fun to all ride our bikes over.

Ride to the Farmers' Market

This Saturday, May 15th, marks the first day of the Pepper Place Farmers’ Market and that means it marks the first Bike Bus to the Farmers’ Market from the Bici Coop! This Saturday I, Alan, will be leading a bike bus from Bici HQ down to Pepper Place at 7:45 am. Be sure to bring a helmet, lock, and a bag you can carry away your spoils with!

The May Day Birthday party was a great success. Bikes were raced, beer was imbibed and many enjoyed an espresso martini! Special thanks to Alabama Beverage, Primavera Coffee Roasters and Red Bull for sponsoring.

Thanks again to everyone for making our first year so fun and fulfilling. We did it!

Space One Eleven Biked tomorrow night!

Tomorrow night Bici, the Birmingham Art Collective, and WeareRtists are going to Bike the hell out of Space One Eleven. Come out around 7:30 to play with our bike junk in an attempt to make some wicked awesome bike art over one wild night. Any and everything created will be displayed over the coming weeks in their windows and scattered around in the trees, meters, and other such mess on the sidewalk. Free food and beverages! Get it!

Jersey Update

For everyone who made jersey orders the final order has been placed with Champion Systems. They should be done in the next few weeks and we will be shipping them out to all of our out of town buddies as we can.

For everyone who missed out on the order, we will make another order in time for the fall cross season.

May Day Details

OK everyone, this weekend is the 1 year anniversary of the Bici Bicycle Cooperative. The main event is a 1.7 mile time trial up the side of Red Mountain. If you’re not quite sure what a time trial is, it is a one by one race against the clock. The racer with the fastest time in his/her category wins. This is the course:

Registration will begin at 7:30pm at the coop and then we will head down to the start on Highland Ave by the golf course. Racers will be started every minute from the start spot and there time will be calculated as the cross the finish line in the Altamont school parking lot. There are only two places where racers will not have right of way to vehicles, one being a stop sign on 38th St and Cliff Rd, the other at the top of the climb turning on Altamont Rd. We will have a volunteer posted at each to stop traffic/warn cyclists of upcoming traffic. Racers will then head back down to Bici or a vantage spot to watch the race on the course. Spectators are encouraged along the course! Come out and cheer!

Following the race there will be an open house at Bici HQ. We will have coffee and espresso drinks provided by Primavera Coffee Roasters and a keg of Sweetwater beer provided by AlaBev. Awards ceremony will be held as soon as results are finalized. This should be a really good time for cyclists and friends a like, SO COME OUT!
