National Bike to Work Day: Birmingham

May 18th is National Bike to Work Day! We will be celebrating after work that day at Avondale Brewing Company. So ride to work, then come meet up with other riders and celebrate both your ride to work and the start of the weekend with a few delicious, locally brewed beers.

3rd Anniversary Recap

We had a simple and relaxed race+party to celebrate our 3rd year as an organization.

The night started off with the hill climb up to Altamont School. This isn’t a traditional alleycat - racers started 1 minute apart and climbed up the same route, with whoever had the fastest time winning the ultimate prize - money! We also had a prize of cookies for first fixed/ss and fastest person who rode in “street” clothes. Thomas won that coveted prize because he repp’d in the clothes he wore to a wedding he was attending right up to the start of the race, and which he returned to after collecting his spoils.

After the race we tucked into a keg and celebrated both the co-op’s ability to last this long, and the people that have helped keep us going. Thank you everyone who attended, who has supported the co-op in the past, and those of you yet to come. We appreciate what everyone has done for us over the years, and look forward to what the future brings for the Birmingham cycling community. To bikes!

*Thanks to Daniel Jordan for taking photos! And thanks again to Neil Russler for the amazing poster!*

MAY 5: Annual May Day Hill Climb Birthday Celebration

It’s been 3 years! That means it’s time to put on your climbing legs and your drinking arms! If you don’t feel like climbing, leave your legs at home and just give you arms a workout. We need your help to empty a keg.

Registration starts at 7:00PM, and race starts at 8:00PM. Route here.

This will be a time trial style race, meaning each person will be racing the clock. There will be a 1 minute gap between each person, so no mass start.

$5 to race, $0 to hang and empty the keg. There will be a CASH PAY OUT! KOM (first place men) and QOM (first place women) will split the cash from the entry fees. Extra special prize for DFL, and maybe a few more goodies here and there.

Yep, HAPPY BIRTHDAY BICI!

Avondale Park Goals to be Reviewed

The public is invited to attend the Annual Friends of Avondale Park meeting at Avondale Library, 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 17, where continuing progress at the park and the Friends’ strategic plan will be discussed.

The strategic plan, with an initial focus on the next five years, according to Adam Snyder, president of the FOAP, is an outcome of an intensive survey and analysis performed for the park’s volunteer group by The Clarus Consulting Group, a Birmingham headquartered survey and research firm to help identify and provide insight and focus for the future. Snyder said that the plans call for a community-based effort to assure increased and harmonious use of the park.

“We are experiencing renewed interest by the many people and groups who use and plan to use Avondale Park,” Snyder said, “and we want to be prepared and able to aid in the diversity of operations and uses of the park.”

——-

This will be a good opportunity for people interested in cycling related activities at public parks (such as mobile shops, cyclocross, bike rodeos, etc.), to share how they would like to see this park used. I hear they are against Cyclocross at this and all other city parks, but we should at least make our presence and wishes known.
