Ride to the Farmers’ Market

This Saturday, May 15th, marks the first day of the Pepper Place Farmers’ Market and that means it marks the first Bike Bus to the Farmers’ Market from the Bici Coop! This Saturday I, Alan, will be leading a bike bus from Bici HQ down to Pepper Place at 7:45 am. Be sure to bring a helmet, lock, and a bag you can carry away your spoils with!

Class this Sunday!

This Sunday at 3 is class #2 in our series.  It will be an open forum to ask any questions you have about bikes and problems and how they work. Does your bike make a crazy sound when it shifts up?  Ask Heath!   Do your brakes act funny and you can’t figure out why?  Ask Heath!  Feel that little shake when you head down a hill?  Ask Heath!

This is your chance to ask all those little questions you wonder about and learn what is going on and how to fix or prevent it.  As well, we will talk a bit about how a bike works.  This class will also be a good way to gauge what problems people are having so we can tailor our class schedule to that.

Last class wasn’t too crowded, so we are hoping more of you guys will come.  I know the days are really pretty and being inside sounds terrible…well, we meet outside!  Who know, maybe we can haul everything down to the park if you guys insist.  :)

See you Sunday!!

ADA Tour de Cure

Diabetes is an ugly disease the affects so many people, here in Alabama more than in most places.

The American Diabetes Association is putting on the annual Tour de Cure and Bici is getting a team together to participate!  Here are the details:

Sign up here. Choose Bici Bicycle Cooperative as your team.  If you do this, you can use the promo code of 2009 and get the $25 registration fee waived!  This is for Bici team members only, so be sure to put us as your team.

There are many routes you can choose to ride, from 15 miles to 100 miles!  I think we are going to try to ride 100KM, about 66 miles.  EEK!  If you want to train with us (read:ride around), shoot us a message or comment.  You are free to ride as many or as few miles as you would like.

Now you have to raise $150 in support.  Use Facebook, Twitter and guilt (for the family) to get it.  Everyone knows someone affected by Diabetes, now is everyone’s chance to help.

Then its time to ride!  We will all be out there with a tent, having a blast!  Any questions, shout at me: elisa@bicicoop.org

This should be a grand time!  Remember, it’s only a ride, NOT a race.  Come out and have a good time.

Ride with us on 5/22/2010!

A chance to help out

This is from Birmingham’s infamous DirtDog and his cycling group email. If you can come out and help, please do. I can’t imagine life without a bike, and don’t think anyone else should.

Message:

We could really use some help from local cyclists next Friday, August 7th. At the Lakeshore Foundation, we’ll be helping U.S. Veterans that lost their sight in the service enjoy riding a bike again. This is an event called Operation Night Vision, and Steve Fair helps out every year. He’s really short on volunteers this time and if any of you are willing to take a day to help out, we’d be eternally grateful.

We’re looking for both strong riders willing to captain tandem bikes and also for people willing to assist the veterans as needed with getting on and off the bikes. Its an all day event, but there are two shifts (9-12 and 1-4) if you can’t stay all day. Any time you are willing to give is greatly appreciated.

If you’re interested or know someone that would be, please let me know! Its an incredible experience and one neither you or the soldiers will soon forget………
